💡 Amazon KDP Tip: KDP will automatically place a barcode on your back cover if you leave space for it. You only need to generate your own barcode here if you are designing a full-spread cover PDF and prefer to embed the barcode yourself (e.g., to ensure exact placement or use IngramSpark simultaneously).
Create print-ready barcodes for your book's back cover.
If you utilize a "Free KDP ISBN," Amazon will automatically generate and place a barcode in the bottom right corner of your back cover during the printing process. You do not need to upload your own barcode. However, if you purchased your own ISBN (e.g., from Bowker in the US) and are handling your own full cover formatting for expanded distribution (IngramSpark, Barnes & Noble), you must generate and embed your own barcode.
A price extension is the smaller, 5-digit barcode directly to the right of the main ISBN barcode. Physical bookstores use this so their checkout scanners can instantly read the retail price. The first digit represents currency (5 = US Dollars) and the remaining digits represent the price. For a book costing $14.99 in the US, the extension is 51499. If you don't want to fix a permanent price on the cover, use the code 90000, indicating "No Suggested Retail Price."
Industry standard placement is the bottom right corner of the back cover. The barcode must be printed on a solid white background box (ideally 2 inches wide by 1.2 inches tall) to ensure laser scanners can read the contrast between the black bars and the background. Never print a barcode directly over dark imagery, gradients, or colorful patterns.
In 2007, the publishing industry transitioned from 10-digit ISBNs to 13-digit ISBNs to align with the global EAN (European Article Number) barcode system used for all retail products. This expanded the available pool of numbers. All new books require a 13-digit ISBN, which universally begins with the prefix 978 or 979.
